Social housing lists ‘would take 119 years to clear at current building rate’

Research by the housing charity Shelter has revealed alarming statistics regarding social housing in England. The study indicates that over 1.3 million households are currently on waiting lists for social homes, and at the present rate of construction, it would take an astonishing 119 years to clear these lists.

In the past year, only 12,198 new social homes were built by councils, housing associations, and private developers across the country. This translates to an average of 110 households waiting for each new home constructed. The charity warns that unless the government takes decisive action to address the growing council housing debt, future generations of children in England may face homelessness.

Shelter's findings highlight a critical issue in the UK housing market, where demand for affordable housing far exceeds supply. The charity is calling for urgent government intervention to increase the rate of social housing development and alleviate the pressures faced by families in need of stable housing.
