Our host just vanished, but Booking.com still said ‘no’ to a refund

A recent incident involving a UK traveller highlights the challenges faced when booking accommodations through online platforms. A customer and a friend paid £609 for an apartment in Paris via Booking.com, only to receive a notification the following day stating that their booking had not been confirmed. The message advised them to reach out to the property owner directly.

Despite multiple attempts to contact the host, both the travellers and Booking.com were unable to establish communication. In a rather unusual suggestion, a call centre manager advised the customers to travel to Paris and knock on the door of the apartment, indicating that if no one answered, they should contact Booking.com again. Without this step, the manager stated that a refund would not be possible.

This situation raises concerns about the reliability of online booking services and their customer support processes, particularly in cases where hosts become unresponsive. The incident serves as a reminder for travellers to consider the potential risks associated with booking accommodations online and the importance of understanding the terms and conditions related to refunds.
