Latest UK-focused news and updates.
SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, is set to make its debut on the US stock market today after successfully raising $75 billion in what is anticipated to be the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history. The company has been valued at approximately $1.77 trillion, highlighting its significant role in the burgeoning space economy.
A recent poll by Opinium reveals that interest in SpaceX shares is notably high among UK investors, particularly among younger demographics. Approximately 25% of Gen Z and Millennial investors in the UK have either applied for shares or plan to do so on the day of the IPO. In contrast, about 15% of all UK investors are participating in this historic offering. The data indicates a gender disparity, with 18% of male investors expressing interest compared to 10% of female investors.
Marex Financial, which has facilitated the UK retail aspect of the IPO, reported that over 60% of UK investors who applied for shares received their full allocation. However, those who sought to invest more than £2,000 faced scaling back, with a cap of 1,000 shares allocated to larger investors. This reflects the high demand and limited availability of shares in this unprecedented offering.
The launch of SpaceX on the stock market underscores the increasing importance of the space sector as a vital component of global economic infrastructure. As the US leads the way in the commercial space race, UK investors are keen to participate in this transformative industry.
