Asian Stocks Decline Amid US-Iran Tensions

Asian stock markets have experienced a downturn as tensions escalate between the US and Iran, following an exchange of fire. This geopolitical instability has raised concerns among investors, contributing to a cautious trading atmosphere.

In Europe, stock markets opened relatively stable, with the UK's FTSE 100 index slightly up by 0.1%. The German DAX and French CAC 40 also saw minor gains of around 0.1%. The Stoxx Europe 600, which encompasses major companies across the continent, rose by 0.07%.

Attention is now focused on the upcoming US inflation data, set to be released later today. Economists anticipate a rise in both core and headline inflation, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) expected to reach 4.2%. This would mark the highest inflation rate since April 2023, potentially increasing pressure on the US Federal Reserve to consider interest rate hikes. The Fed faces a challenging situation, balancing the need to control inflation against potential pushback from the President regarding rate increases.

In the UK, the financial year has begun positively for some companies. Metlen Energy & Metals has emerged as the top performer in the FTSE 100, with shares climbing 3.6%. Other notable gainers include Associated British Foods and Tesco, up by 2.2% and 1.8%, respectively. Conversely, Endeavour Mining, Relx, and Experian have seen their shares decline by approximately 2.3%.

As the summer season approaches, businesses are preparing for increased demand, particularly in the tourism sector, with strong advance bookings for events like the World Cup and a rise in staycation interest.
