The UK is at risk of creating a "lost generation" of young people who are out of work, according to the latest findings from Alan Milburn's review on youth unemployment. The report suggests that the number of young people classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) could reach 1.25 million by the early 2030s.
Debbie Abrahams MP, chair of the Work and Pensions Committee, emphasized the urgency of addressing this crisis, stating that the causes of youth unemployment are complex and require a comprehensive government response. She highlighted that many of Milburn's findings align with evidence gathered during the committee's own inquiry into youth employment, education, and training.
Abrahams rejected the stereotype of the current youth as a "snowflake generation," asserting that immediate action is necessary to prevent long-term damage to the lives of young people. The committee has engaged with numerous young individuals who have expressed their struggles and aspirations, underscoring the need for systemic change in the approach to youth employment.
In addition to the youth unemployment crisis, first-time homebuyers are facing significant challenges, with conditions now tougher than during the financial crisis.
