Agentic Orchestration in UK Enterprises: A Deployment Dilemma

A recent survey of 101 UK enterprises reveals a significant gap between the ambition for agent orchestration in AI and the current reality of deployment. The research highlights that while organizations are rapidly consolidating onto major model-provider platforms, notably Anthropic’s Claude, most of their deployed "agents" remain basic chatbot wrappers rather than sophisticated multi-step orchestrated workflows.

Anthropic's Claude is the leading platform, utilized by 40% of respondents, followed by Microsoft (18%) and OpenAI (13%). The choice of platform is primarily influenced by the underlying model's capabilities, with 21% of enterprises prioritizing model alignment. However, a staggering 71% of respondents admit that only a quarter or fewer of their agents are capable of true multi-step orchestration. Only 10% report that more than half of their agents meet this criterion.

The survey indicates that enterprises are moving towards a hybrid control model, with 51% expecting to manage orchestration through a combination of provider-native and external systems. This approach is largely driven by concerns over vendor lock-in, which 35% of respondents identified as their primary risk. Investment is shifting towards agent workflow tooling (34%) and security measures (25%), reflecting a desire to enhance orchestration capabilities.

Despite these advancements, fiscal control remains a challenge. Over a quarter of enterprises lack real-time mechanisms to prevent budget overruns caused by autonomous agents. This indicates a lag in the development of cost-control measures compared to the deployment of orchestration layers.

In summary, while UK enterprises are eager to embrace AI orchestration, the reality of their deployments often falls short of their aspirations, with many still relying on basic chatbot functionalities. The coming years will be crucial for bridging this gap and realizing the full potential of AI-driven orchestration.
